2nd African Championship was held in Malawi

2nd African Draughts-64 Championship was held from 8 to 14 July 2018 in the city of Blantyre, Malawi. Organizers of the competitions was International Draughts Federation (IDF), African Draughts Confederation and the Association of Draughts of Malawi (ADMA). Competitions were held with the support of the Government of Malawi and the Malawi National Council of Sports. Competitions were held in three programs: Classic, Rapid and Blitz, with three versions of draughts: international/Russian, Brazilian and Pool checkers, and will be qualifying for World Draughts-64 Championship 2019. Competitions were held with the support of the Fund for Promoting the Development of Draughts Sport “Russian Draughts”.

Sam Senoga from Uganda won Blitz. Enock Makoka Banda from Malawi won Rapid. Lukanga Mwambwe from Zambia won Classic program. See results.

15-07-2018 Closing ceremony of the 2nd African Draughts-64 Championship-64 took place on July 13. Prize-winners of three programs of the individual championship were awarded with cups, medals and diplomas. All participants of the classic program received memorable diplomas. In the team classification teams and their participants in all three programs were awarded diplomas. The award ceremony was attended by representatives of the Malawi National Council of Sports.

Competitions were held with the support of the Fund for Promoting the Development of Draughts Sport “Russian Draughts”. The prize fund of the championship was 3100 US dollars.

13-07-2018 In accordance with the regulations of the African Championship, in all three programs a team classification among the national federations was established. In the team classification for Blitz and Rapid the championship won the hosts team of Malawi. In the classic program the team of Zambia was the best. See the results of team classification.

13-07-2018 Сlassic program of the 2nd African Draughts-64 Championship ended. Lukanga Mwambwe from Zambia won the classic program and was awarded the title of International Grandmaster. Enock Makoka Banda from Malawi lost to the champion on additional criteria. He was ranked second and was awarded the title of International Master. Another Malawian player Madalitso Thoma was third. 12-07-2018 On the way to Blantyre (Malawi) for conducting of the 2nd African Draughts-64 Championship, the IDF leadership consisting of IDF president Vladimir Langin, the tournament director and the Main Arbiter of the African championship Aleksandr Nikiforov and general secretary Antonina Langina met in Johannesburg (South Africa) on July 7, (MSSA) with president of the Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) Amanda Paqade. The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere. The prospects of mutual cooperation between IDF and MSSA, development of draughts-64 in South Africa and on the African continent were discussed. Publication


11-07-2018 After the games, IDF President Vladimir Langin met with leaders and representatives of the national federations of the countries participating in the African Championship. At the meeting, Vladimir Langin talked about IDF activities and immediate plans. The development and promotion of draughts-64 in Africa were discussed.


11-07-2018 Classic program started. Competitions are held in the International/Russian  version of draughts-64, according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds by the system of micro-matches from 2 games with the draw of the initial moves and positions according to the official table with time control 30’+5″. 3 rounds are held today. 10-07-2018 Rapid was held today. Competitions were held in the Pool Checkers  version of draughts-64, according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds by the system of micro-matches from 2 games with the draw of the initial moves and positions according to the official table with time control 7’+5″. 09-07-2018 2nd African Draughts-64 Championship started today in the city of Blantyre, Malawi. The venue of the competition was changed. The championship is held in the city center, in the 5-star hotel: Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel.

Representatives of 8 countries take part in the competition: Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.
