African Championship and World Cup held in Zambia

The International Draughts Federation (IDF) in accordance with the Calendar of the competitions in 2023 held the 3rd African Draughts-64 Championship and the World Cup from July 8 to 15, 2023 in Lusaka (Zambia).

Organizers of Competitions: International Draughts Federation (IDF), African Draughts Confederation (ADF) and Zambia Draughts Federation (ZDF) as the direct host organization. The competition were held with the support of the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Child Development of Zambia.

More than 60 athletes from 9 countries took part in the competitions.

For men, the absolute winner in all three programs was William, C. Chinzewe (Zambia). Flavia, Kusiima (Uganda) won the women’s Blitz program, Suzen, Kachepa (Malawi) won Rapid and Classic program. In the World Cup, the absolute winners in all three programs were Roman Schukin for men and Suzen, Kachepa (Malawi) for women!

17-07-2023 The International Draughts Federation (IDF), together with the African Draughts Confederation (ADF) and the Zambian Draughts Federation (ZDF), successfully held the 3rd African Draughts-64 Championship among men, the 1st African Championship among among women and the World Cup. The African Championships and the World Cup were qualifiers for the 2024 World Championship.

More than 60 athletes from 9 countries took part in the competition.

It should be noted that the level of play of African athletes has increased significantly in recent years. A young player from Zambia, William, C. Chinzewe, who has already proved himself in the individual and team world championships in 2022 in Bulgaria, became the absolute champion of Africa in draughts-64 among men and deservedly received the title of International Grandmaster. Now there are already 3 international grandmasters in Africa! All of them performed with dignity at the world championships.

The 1st African Women’s Championship revealed new stars of women’s draughts. Suzen, Kachepa (Malawi) won 5 out of 6 gold medals in all programs at the African Championships and the Women’s World Cup. We are confident that she will adequately defend the honor of her country and all of Africa at the upcoming women’s world championship.

The World Cup was attended by 5 of the 6 leaders of the 2022/2023 World Cup, who are fighting for access to the 2024 World Cup. The strongest Africanplayers successfully competed with them, having won 5 medals in three World Cup programs! And the absolute winner of the World Cup in Zambia was Roman Shchukin, the 2023 European champion among men. Roman also held a session of simultaneous play on 30 boards for participants in the African Championships.

The International Draughts Federation (IDF) provided great support to the organizers:
provided the prize fund of the African Championships and the World Cup, brought inventory – boards and pieces, which was left by the Zambian Draughts Federation and distributed to the participating countries. The participating countries received the first textbook on draughts-64 (Russian version) in English, which will allow them to professionally prepare playersfor the upcoming starts.


14-07-2023 In the evening, the closing ceremony of all competitions took place.

The participants of the competitions were greeted by the ensemble of national songs and dances.

13-07-2023 The 5th and 6th rounds of the African Championship in classic game among men and women took place today.

After 6 rounds, Enock, Banda (Malawi) and William, C. Chinzewe (Zambia) are in the lead in men. They have 10 points.
Suzen, Kachepa (Malawi) lead in women.

The last program of the World Cup has started – Rapid, Russian draughts.

12-07-2023 The 3rd and 4th rounds of the African Championship in classic game among men and women took place today.

After 4 rounds, the international master Enock, Banda is in the lead in men and Suzen, Kachepa is in the lead in women (both Malawi).

11-07-2023 For the first time in Africa, the World Cup in draughts-64 is held. Competitions are held in the capital of Zambia, Lusaka, together with the African Draughts-64 Championship among men and women.

The International Draughts Federation (IDF) has been holding World Cups since 2010 with the aim of popularizing draughts-64 in the world, qualifying for world championships, making players from different continents more accessible to participate in significant international competitions, improving their skills and fulfilling the norms of international titles.

The World Cup is steadily evolving. Stages of the World Cup are regularly held in Europe and Asia, the first World Cup was held in Jamaica, in Pan America. This year is held the first World Cup in Africa. Thus, the stages of the World Cup covered 4 continents. In the future, it is planned to hold the stages of the World Cup on different continents on a regular basis.

The first program of the African stage of the World Cup took place – Blitz (Brazilian draughts).

30 athletes from 9 countries took part in the competition. The strongest athletes of the world came to participate in the competition – 5 out of 6 leaders of the 2022/2023 World Cup, international grandmasters: European champion 2023 Roman Shchukin, bronze medalist of the 2022 World Championship Georgii Taranin, World Cup leader Aleksandr Getmansky, winners of the World Cup stages Dmitrii Melnikov and Mazhit Sarshaev. The strongest African athletes compete with them.

11-07-2023 The African Championship in Classic game among men and women has started.
Competitions will be held according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds, by a system of micro-matches consist of two games with a draw of the initial moves and positions according the official tables and binding on both games of the micro-match.
44 men and 13 women from 8 countries take part in the competition.

10-07-2023 After the end of the African Rapid Championship, the 2023 European champion Roman Shchukin gave a simultaneous game session for the participants of the African Championship on 30 boards. Roman won the session with a score of 36:24 (winning 9 games, drawing 18 games and losing three games).


10-07-2023 Today, the African Rapid Championship among men and women was held.
44 men and 13 women from 8 countries took part in the competition.

Just like in Blitz, William, C. Chinzewe (Zambia) became the African men’s champion in Rapid!
Suzen Kachepa (Malawi) became the African women’s champion in Rapid.

09-07-2023 The 3rd African Draughts-64 Championship and the World Cup started in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.
For the first time, the African Women’s Championship will be held within the framework of the championship.

Today, the opening of the competition took place and the African Blitz Championship among men and women was held.
40 men and 13 women from 8 countries took part in the competition, among them almost all the strongest players in Africa in draughts-64: international grandmasters, champions of Africa in 2016 and 2018 Richard, Mambwe (DR Congo) and Lukanga, Mambwe (Zambia).

As a result of a stubborn struggle, a young talented athlete from Zambia, William, C. Chinzewe, became the champion of Africa in the men’s Blitz! Flavia, Kusiima (Uganda) became women’s African champion!
